The Terengganu government is making use of the tourism lull brought about by the Covid-19 outbreak to upgrade infrastructure at tourist attractions in the state.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the lower number of tourist arrivals, especially at beaches and popular holiday spots, allowed for repair and beautification work to be carried out for the comfort of visitors.

“In addition, we can also use the time to produce educational and promotional material for tourists when they come to Terengganu later,” he said after launching the Setiu Wetlands open day here.

Also present were CIMB Islamic Bank chief executive officer Ahmad Shariman Mohd Shariff and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia CEO Lim Chooi Kuan.

Various activities were held In conjunction with the event, including mangrove planting, gotong-royong to clean the wetlands as well as talks on the importance of environmental conservation.

Ahmad Shariman said the state government had allocated RM1mil a year, starting this year, to manage and implement sustainable green initiatives at Setiu Wetlands.

“These initiatives can provide long-term benefits to the conservation process in the area,” he added. – Bernama
